My sister bought a King Cake for Denny's birthday to celebrate in advance.
Attached with the King Cake was The History of King Cakes. I hope you find it as interesting as I did.
The Mardi Gras season officially begins on January 6th or the "Twelfth Night", also know to Christians as the "Epiphany". Bethlehem is where infant Jesus first showed himself to the world. As a symbol of his Holy Day a tiny plastic baby is placed inside each King Cakes. The King Cake tradition is thought to have been brought to New Orleans from France in 1870.
The King Cake is an oval-shaped bakery delicacy crossed between a coffee cake and a French pastry, that is as rich in history as it is in flavor. It's decorated in royal colors of Purple, which signifies Justice, Green for Faith, and Gold for Power. These colors were to resemble a jeweled crown honoring the Wise Men who visited the Christ Child on Epiphany. In the past such things as coins, beans, pecans or peas were hidden inside each King Cake. Today, a tiny plastic baby is the common prize. The person who finds the baby is named King for a day and bound by custom to host the next party and provide the King Cake.
We each had a piece of King Cake and the tiny plastic baby was not found. Mmmm, that King Cake was good. I'll let you know which one of us has to host the next party.
Thank-you Nancy for the introduction to King Cake and celebrating Denny's birthday.
"Goodby until later".

I saw one of these cakes (for the first time) yesterday at Kroger! It didn't look as yummy as Aunt Nancy's though. :)
